I always figured the primary reason we had the Civil War was to keep the country together, and the secondary reason was to end slavery. I've often wondered what this land would be like if Lincoln had allowed the southern states to secede. I know they'd eventually have freed the slaves, like the rest of the world did (mostly). I wonder if there's an alt-history book with that premise.
