Thank you! Finally, someone mentions that 2018 Hotez article "Crafting Your Scientist Brand." I try to cite it in every substack article that mentions his name. It just doesn't seem like something a legitimate scientist ought to be focusing on.

"Hotez worked very hard to brand himself as a scientific celebrity (to the point he even wrote a paper about how he’d done it) so he could be an ambassador of science." I'm sure he likes the attention, but since he went on a publicity tour in 2019 to praise the gloriousness of vaccines, perhaps an equal if not greater motivation was protecting the funding flow for his tropical vaccine Institute.

As for not wanting to debate RFK, you "can empathize with why he is terrorized by the thought anyone might look into what he did." That, charitably, would imply he's capable of feeling guilt (doubtful) or is afraid of legal consequences. Personally, I think he's more afraid of the resulting "irrelevance and mockery" if he lost such a debate. And of course loss of $$$.

I really appreciate you sending me that article. I was in disbelief when I first read it and I have been referencing it ever since. I am pinning your comment since you should be recognized for digging that up (Hotez writes so much it's hard to go through all of his work).

Actually I ran across it in another comment months ago. As for his prodigious output, no doubt churning out (easy and) fairly worthless articles is part of his branding strategy. Get a load of this one—If you read the short article, it's rather impressive how he managed to stretch enough connections to make it sound vaguely plausible.

It’s a tragedy that idiotic psychopaths such as Hotez end up being in positions of power. So much of that going around. For a long time, of course. I grew up assuming that people in powerful, high positions of authority were ‘good’ and ‘intelligent’ with a moral compass. Nope. I was wrong. A painful yet vital life lesson.

Expand full comment

Wow, that's a great contribution to bring attention to that article, Tardigrade. Of course no legitimate scientist should ever think in such a way. You're right, psychopaths don't feel terror like normals do, he has plenty of practical reasons for avoiding debate. Starting with, he knows he's lying, and he enjoys getting away with lying. Any debate jeopardizes that. He's certainly not stupid, just evil. I feel sorry for his child, he did nothing to deserve being damaged. As to Hotez, I'm glad he suffers having a damaged child. I hope he gets shingles tomorrow. Followed by cancer. Followed by tinnitus, cluster headaches, and a severe back injury, all at the same time. I don't think that makes me bad, I just recognize who are our enemies are and where they come from.

Expand full comment

Dunno about the terror, but my understanding is that the main trait of psychopaths is that they don't feel empathy. I think they also tend to be arrogant, and that could easily prevent any feeling of terror or fear.

Expand full comment

You are correct, that is the most defining characteristic. It's important to remember our understanding of psychopathy is imperfect. Most all the early work that really defined the conventional understanding of it was done working with incarcerated or institutionalized people, since those populations are so much easier to study. Hervey Cleckley was the pioneer who really jump-started our understanding of it. His subjects were in a mental institution. Robert Hare, the second most influential person in the earlier days (and maybe he still is, I haven't kept up that much over the last decade or so) studied criminals in prison. Our knowledge of highly functioning psychopaths has grown a lot since them, but like all of psychology, it's imperfect to say the least. They do not feel shame or remorse. Ever notice how so many politicians have such a thick skin? They can be humiliated in such ways that a normal person would want to crawl into a hole and hide, yet they are completely unfazed. That's an extremely valuable trait for a politician, or anyone aspiring to claw his way to the top of any institution. They have a LOT of advantages, including that their traits are very attractive to normals, who gravitate towards "leaders" who show "strength" and unwavering confidence. It's also important to understand that, while there are plenty of full-blown psychopaths whose brains function quite differently and feel absolutely no empathy, guilt, or shame, no matter what, it exists on a spectrum and there are plenty of "near-psychopaths" who are often high-functioning. I don't succumb to the temptation to call them sociopaths, I believe in calling a spade a spade. Some say the two are not the same, it's possible to define them differently, but there's really no need, it unnecessarily complicates understanding the phenomenon.

Expand full comment

I poked around one day to try to find out the difference between a sociopath and a psychopath. Different authorities have different definitions, so there is no one definitive definition, so to speak.

My working definition is that sociopathy is a spectrum, with psychopathy at one extreme end.

I must confess that my introduction to psychopaths was Jon Ronson's book The Psychopath Test. Admittedly Ronson is mostly a humorist (so the book is a very enjoyable read) but if the experiences in the book are true, he did serious research and went all over the world visiting various psychopaths in prisons, mostly.

I've read more about it since then, and next up on my list is Political Ponerology, which looks much more daunting.

Expand full comment

A sociopath is a pavement or sidewalk wide enough for two people to walk along side by side.

A psychopath is crazy paving. :)

Expand full comment

More daunting is an understatement! Reading twice won't get it with Łobaczewski, it takes more passes than that, for me at least. Worth it though for sure. Sounds like you're on the right track. It's not possible to understand how things work, and why they are as they are, without a good understanding of psychopathy, including how normals react. Re psychopath/sociopath, it's a pointless discussion IMO. The condition, its degrees, how it manifests in different individuals, how it affects others, is what matters. Sure you can come up with some guidelines and stick on different labels. I don't see any point to doing that, it just causes confusion for absolutely no reason.

Expand full comment

I agree that getting tangled up in semantic weeds is counterproductive. As you say, the effect is what matters. My mental model is useful in that I can imagine how sociopaths game various systems (government, industry, science) to their advantage, and the real psychopaths tend to rise to the top, like cream. Or maybe scum is a better word.

Expand full comment

Hotez is a real "Ho" selling worse than just toxic information in order to make a buck. His use of the word Science, when referring to vaccines is absolutely rotten. There is nothing scientific about injecting toxic substances into the human body...and declaring they will provide immunity. If the medical profession had any knowledge about natural immunity and the manner in which the lymphatic system work...they would see that it would be impossible to create immunity by injecting poisonous substances directly into the bloodstream. If the substance was arsenic...it would be called murder, but what has been used for many decades is in the same realm...and what is being used today is no better.

Nah. Per the claims of a certain vax zealot relative, the same would apply to arsenic that applies to mercury: its a special kind of arsenic with an entirely different atomic structure and its already in our bodies every day in huge quantities far surpassing any in vaccines, it being a vital nutrient necessary for our health and in no way toxic.

Anything you put in a vaccine is always by definition good, healthy and necessary. Because vaccines are so miraculous that anything toxic put in them is automatically transformed into a safe substance merely by word "vaccine" on the label. Place a drop of any vaccine into a vat of sulfuric acid and marvel at how the entire vat becomes safe and effective! Truly this is potent god-stuff they wish to give us and we are simply ungrateful fascist children with violent tendencies for asking so many questions.

MwD... Insightful post, but sympathy has limits. Adolf Hitler had a wretched family life and life experiences, too, and one can certainly argue reasonably that those things shaped that man. But, those things unleashed a monster. Most historical despotic figures have similar backgrounds. Does any of that absolve them of their crimes against Humankind? No.

Hotez falls into the same group of damaged souls that veer toward evil instead of steering their trauma experience into serving Humankind.

He was surrounded by murderous sycophantic psychopaths, grifters and charlatans (like so many politicians in the West today). Any good that he may have done for the people of Germany was cancelled by mad ethnocentrism, racism, revenge, and mass murder on an industrial scale. Another "Time" Man of the Year! Today, he would probably have been awarded a Nobel Peace Prize a la O'bomber.

Do these political and industrial mobsters believe they are "doing good"? Could there be a correlation between the two mindsets? (Regret I said that) However, in that he’s trying to debunk JFK Jr’s heavily documented position’s on certain vaccines and COVID’s experimental chemical concoctions (ECC) as “misinformation”, then one can validly wonder how Hotez ever gained his PhD.

The man is blind to not only lack of efficacy of the ECC’s but their apparent actual negative efficacy beyond 90 days, as he blames hundreds of thousands of deaths for being unvaccinated.
