Because I read a lot of crime novels and watch Law and Order, you know how investigators cover their nose when they come upon a dead body, it’s smelled like that. It was horrifying inexplicable.

Putrescine, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Putrescine together with cadaverine, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cadaverine is largely responsible for the foul odor of putrefying flesh, but also contributes to other unpleasant odors. Some suggest rancidity (such as from phagocytosis?) may contribute to these odors. To me, malondialdehyde https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Malondialdehyde (from polyunsaturated fatty acids) has an exceedingly bad odor. Hexanal (also from rancidity of oleic acid) and propionaldehyde also result from this oxidation, and may account for the reported "perfume-like" odors. "Chemical smell" means nothing (is redundant), since except for phantosmia, all smells are chemical. Is that the smell of HCl, or nonane? Even geosmin is chemical. People like Jeff Rense and Erica Kahn taunt us.
